Investigating Manta Ray Behaviour Using Crittercams

Abstract

How do we find out how animals behave under the water? It can be really difficult, especially with animals that swim large distances, or with animals that prefer to spend time in deep water.

One way we can find out more about an animal’s behaviour is by using something called a National Geographic Crittercam. Developed in their Exploration Technology Lab, Crittercams are small video cameras that can be attached to the body of an animal, giving us an idea of how that animal might see the world. Crittercams have been used with many types of marine animals before, such as seabirds, sharks and turtles!

This study uses Crittercams to find out more about the behaviour of manta rays.
